ACC’s Director of Public Education and Outreach Abubakarr Turay
The Director of Public Education and Outreach Department of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Abubakarr Turay says the Commission is marking its 25thanniversary with an anti-corruption summit that will take place on Tuesday, December 9 at the Bintumani Conference Centre. The theme of the silver jubilee celebration is ‘ACC at 25: Transforming Sierra Leone on the Pillars of Integrity and Accountability’.
Speaking to this medium, Mr Turay said the Commission was established in 2000 in compliance with the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report which followed the country’s decade-long civil. He said the TRC Report singled out corruption as one of the major causes of the war which led to the loss of thousands of lives. “When the war ended, the government then saw it as a matter of urgency and utmost importance to set up the Commission to address the issues of corruption in the country,” he said.
Mr Turay said, since its establishment, the Commission had contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of the country by promoting the values of integrity, accountability and transparency in public life. “The Commission continues to protect public resources- and recover them when the corrupt people misappropriate them. We also ensure that the corrupt are held accountable for every malfeasance caused to the State and people of Sierra Leone. That is why Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala continues to entreat us to see corruption as an destructive enemy of the State and to fight it with the seriousness that it deserves,” he said.
The Director said the keynote address for the summit will be delivered by His Excellency the President Brigadier (Rtd.) Dr Julius Maada Bio. He said the date for the summit also coincides with the International Anti-Corruption Day, which is set aside by the United Nations to bring attention to the adverse consequences of corruption.
He said, as part of the ACC’s silver jubilee celebrations, the Commission will premier a documentary on the Commission’s work, cataloguing its achievements and challenges in the last 25 years. “We will also hold an interfaith prayer session on Monday December 8 and a dinner on Friday December 12 as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations,” he announced.
