The opposition, All People’s Congress (APC) Party’s Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo has cautioned against what he described as rising tensions in Sierra Leone’s political space, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could undermine democratic stability.
The opposition leader’s remarks follow comments attributed to Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, which have sparked controversy and drawn criticism from the APC. In a public statement, Kargbostressed that political competition must be grounded in respect, dialogue, and the rule of law, rather than hostility.
He argued that political parties are fundamental pillars of democracy and should not be treated as adversaries to be eliminated. According to him, the country’s democratic progress depends on tolerance, inclusion, and the protection of diverse political voices.
Kargbo also reflected on Sierra Leone’s political history, noting that past attempts to suppress opposition voices ultimately strengthened democratic resilience rather than weakening it. He warned against repeating such patterns, urging stakeholders to prioritise national unity over partisan interests.
The development comes amid ongoing tensions between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party and the opposition All People’s Congress, including a continued boycott by APC lawmakers over electoral concerns. Efforts by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas to mediate the impasse have so far yielded limited progress.
Kargbo concluded by urging all political actors to exercise restraint and uphold democratic values, emphasizing that Sierra Leone’s future should be determined through peaceful engagement and the collective will of its people.
