The 12-day nationwide electricity interruption announced by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) officially commenced yesterday as the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Plant begins its annual maintenance exercise scheduled to run from May 18 to May 29, 2026.
According to EDSA, the planned maintenance is aimed at improving the efficiency, safety, and long-term reliability of Sierra Leone’s electricity supply system.
The temporary disruption is expected to affect several communities across the country while engineers and technical experts undertake critical repairs, inspections, and servicing work at the Bumbuna facility.
EDSA stated that the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure and reduce the frequency of unexpected electricity outages in the future.
The Authority encouraged residents, businesses, and institutions to make the necessary preparations during the maintenance period to minimize disruptions to their daily activities and operations.
EDSA also appealed to the public for patience and understanding, emphasising that the temporary inconvenience is intended to ensure a more stable, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply nationwide upon completion of the maintenance work.
The Bumbuna Hydroelectric Plant remains one of Sierra Leone’s major sources of electricity generation, supplying power to Freetown and several communities across the country.
