Sierra Leone has recorded a major milestone in its quest for reliable, 24-hour electricity supply with the arrival of the first turbine for the 108-megawatt Nant Power project in Freetown, alongside ongoing installation works on a wind turbine in Bonthe Town.
The twin developments signal a renewed push by government to expand energy generation through both conventional and renewable sources, with authorities describing the progress as a turning point for the country’s electricity sector.
Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh announced the arrival of the Nant Power turbine, noting that the project will significantly boost national capacity and lay the foundation for consistent electricity supply to homes, businesses, and industries.
“This marks the beginning of a new phase in our energy sector—more power, more jobs, and more progress,” he stated, underscoring government’s commitment to transforming the country’s power infrastructure.
The Nant Power project, expected to be completed within one year, is designed to deliver a modern power plant capable of providing stable and uninterrupted electricity across Sierra Leone. Officials say the initiative will also contribute to job creation and broader economic growth.
Meanwhile, in Bonthe Town, the installation and assembly of a wind turbine is currently underway—an initiative widely described by residents as a historic and proud moment for the island community. The project represents a significant step toward harnessing renewable energy while addressing longstanding electricity challenges in remote areas.
Community stakeholders have, however, emphasized that the success and sustainability of the Bonthe project will depend heavily on local ownership, vigilance, and proper maintenance. Residents have been urged to safeguard the infrastructure, drawing lessons from past incidents of vandalism and theft of public assets, including solar streetlights.
Energy sector experts note that while Sierra Leone continues to face seasonal power shortages, particularly during the dry season, ongoing investments in generation and transmission infrastructure are positioning the country toward long-term energy stability.
The combination of the Nant Power project and the Bonthe wind initiative is seen as a strategic effort to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce dependence on limited sources, and improve access nationwide.
If successfully implemented, these projects are expected to enhance productivity, improve living conditions, and support Sierra Leone’s broader development agenda.
