Mohamed C. Bah, the 2023 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has said the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone faces a significant constitutional moment as the country awaits its interpretation of the Constitution.
Bah said the court’s decision could have wider implications for how Sierra Leoneans understand the relationship between constitutional authority, political power and judicial independence.
“The Supreme Court now has a date with history,” Bah said, stressing the importance of the court’s role at what he described as a critical juncture for the country.
His comments come as attention remains focused on the Supreme Court and the constitutional issues before it.
Bah said the outcome of the proceedings would extend beyond the immediate matter before the court, arguing that it could influence public understanding of constitutional governance and the separation of institutional powers.
“At this critical juncture, all eyes are on the Supreme Court as the nation awaits its interpretation of the Constitution and its implications for Sierra Leone’s constitutional future,” he said.
He also called for the court to be guided by the Constitution and the principles intended by the country’s founding generation.
“May the Supreme Court be guided by the constitution and the wisdom our forefathers envisioned for our great nation,” Bah said.
His remarks place emphasis on the constitutional role of the judiciary and the importance of judicial independence in resolving matters involving the interpretation of the country’s supreme law.
The statement comes against the backdrop of heightened public interest in constitutional questions and the role of state institutions in Sierra Leone’s democratic system.
