The Rotary Club of Sierra Leone has officially handed over the newly refurbished Law Courts Garden, located near State House, to the Judiciary of Sierra Leone, marking a major boost to environmental protection and the beautification of the Court precinct.
In his keynote remarks, the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, pledged the Judiciary’s full commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the garden’s proper maintenance at all times.
He said to demonstrate such commitment, four staff members have been sent to China for specialized training in environmental protection, underscoring the institution’s long-term commitment to sustainability.
The Chief Justice assured that the newly rehabilitated garden will not be neglected but attract his undivided attention at all times.
According to the Honourable Chief Justice, this initiative is expected to contribute meaningfully to a cleaner and more serene court environment, setting a positive example for public institutions across the country.
Providing a brief background to the project, the former President of the Rotary Club of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the Club’s Environment Committee, Mr. Alpha Tejan Jalloh, described the project as a testament to Rotary’s dedication to preserving and enhancing the environment, one of the organization’s global areas of focus.
He recounted the original state of the garden as “dilapidated, unkempt, and misused,” noting that it had long served as an informal passageway and temporary shelter for activities that undermined the vision of a clean and orderly city.
“It had become a blight in the heart of our City Centre, standing out like a sore thumb,” he said.
He concluded by praising the Judiciary’s leadership for embracing their initiative and reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to community service and environmental stewardship.
On behalf of one of the sponsors, the Deputy Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, Mr. Emmanuel Borborexpressed the institution’s pride in supporting an initiative that aligns with its core values of community partnership, service, and nation-building. He noted that the bank’s participation reflects its commitment not only to financial growth but also to the social and institutional development of Sierra Leone.
“This initiative reflects values that our bank holds deeply, community partnership, service, and nation-building,” he said, adding that “by contributing to a project that enhances the environment of our justice system, we reaffirm our commitment to the social and institutional well-being of our country.”
The Deputy Managing Director extended appreciation to the Rotary Club for its collaboration and dedication to bringing the project to fruition, and to the Judiciary for embracing the initiative and allowing Rokel Commercial Bank to support the enhancement of its environment.
The ceremony concluded with the official handing-over of the garden to the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda.
