Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David MoininaSengeh, has held discussions with former Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the All People’s Congress (APC) government, Frank Kargbo, on the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and challenges surrounding the implementation of its recommendations.
Dr. Sengeh disclosed that their conversation examined the TRC process, particularly the lack of adequate international support for implementing the commission’s recommendations following the completion of its report.
Reflecting on the engagement, the Chief Minister expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn from Kargbo, notwithstanding their different political backgrounds.
“If we had been so intentional, our country might be better now,” Dr. Sengeh remarked, reflecting on the importance of deliberate engagement and cooperation in addressing national issues.
Kargbo previously served as Executive Secretary of the TRC under the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) before later serving as Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the Ernest Bai Koroma-led APC administration.
The engagement highlights the importance of drawing on experience across political lines as Sierra Leone continues to confront questions surrounding national reconciliation, accountability and the implementation of the TRC’s recommendations.
