The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) of the University of Sierra Leone formally matriculated its newly admitted students on 2nd March 2026 during a ceremony held at the College campus in Kossoh Town, Freetown.
The ceremony was presided over by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of COMAHS, Professor James Russell, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aiah Lebbie, who was unavoidably absent.
During the ceremony, the University Registrar, Mr. Munda Lebbie, formally presented the matriculating students to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Following the presentation, the Registrar read the matriculation citation after which the students took the matriculation oath, pledging to abide by the rules, regulations, and statutes governing student conduct at the University.
With the administration of the oath, the students were formally admitted into the College.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Russell congratulated the matriculants and reminded them of the responsibility that comes with studying in the health sciences.
“You have been admitted into one of the most prestigious colleges of the University of Sierra Leone. Your programmes demand discipline, passion, and the highest ethical standards because the professions you are entering deal directly with human life,” Professor Russell stated.
He further cautioned the students against examination malpractice and any form of misconduct.
“COMAHS maintains zero tolerance for examination malpractice and indiscipline. I encourage you to focus on your studies and uphold the integrity and reputation of this institution.”
The matriculation ceremony marks the official and formal admission of students into the College, granting them the legal status to attend lectures, access university facilities, and sit examinations.
As part of the long-standing academic tradition, the newly admitted students also signed the matriculation register, symbolizing their official entry into the University community.
In his remarks, Registrar Munda Lebbie noted that admission into the College was highly competitive, particularly in programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Laboratory Sciences.
“The admission process into COMAHS is rigorous and highly competitive. Those admitted this year represent the best among many applicants, and I encourage you to remain focused and committed to academic excellence,” he said.
The Registrar also described the successful applicants as the crème de la crème and urged them to make the most of the opportunities available at the College.
The ceremony concluded with students taking photographs and interacting with staff and colleagues in a celebratory atmosphere, marking the beginning of their academic journey at COMAHS.
