The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency has expressed worries over what they referred to as a sharp increase in drug abuse among young people between ages 25 and 35 years.
Speaking to AYV newspaper, the Public Relations Officer of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Ibrahim Kargbo said the Agency was established by the Government of Sierra Leone with the sole aim of tackling drugs related issues in Sierra Leone.
He said the Agency also has the role to implement International Convention dealing with drugs related issues and also provides and takes the lead when it comes to drugs related issues in the country.
He said as an Agency, they can authoritatively confirm that drug abuse is on the rampage in Sierra Leone, adding that the situation has become more alarming after more young people between ages 25 and 35 have indulged into active drug abuse.
He assured that as an Agency, they will continue to reach out to communities and parents to educate them on the dangers of drug abuse.
“Drug abuse can cause short and long term infections which will destroy an individual both physical and mentally. Making money out of this harmful substance has become a daily habit by people”,
He said law enforcement authorities have done lots of arrests in various drug abuse spots, adding that they will continue to do more raids and arrests.
He urged government to provide adequate materials so that they can execute their various duties like providing more personnel, patrol vehicles and other devices that can help their investigations; and to also to establish the Agency in the four corners of Sierra Leone.
