Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba has engage in discussions with his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, in order to enhance relations and cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, the two ministers also addressed various regional and international issues, including the Palestinian cause, opening a Sierra Leonean Embassy in Algeria, energy, trade, industry, agriculture, education, research, fishing, and the potential establishment of a joint business council.
Sierra Leone and Algeria have had a long standing bilateral relationship spanning back to the notable events of the 1980 OAU Summit that was conducted in Sierra Leone. Algeria was the biggest external support to President Stevens’s government.
Following years of lull in the relationship, Sierra Leone’s President Dr Julius Maada Bio visited Algiers in January this year to rekindle that historic relationship. The visit led to the opening of an embassy in Algiers and the further deepening of the relationship of the two countries.
Algeria has received the chairmanship of the APRM from President Bio and works with Sierra Leone in the committee of 10 heads of state of the AU for the reform of the UN Security Council. The country is also one of the 3 members of the UN Security Council with Sierra Leone representing Africa.
