Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) has criticised the removal of former Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana from office, saying he personally disagreed with the decision and believed the judges did not do justice to the matter.
Speaking on AYV’s State of the Nation, Kamara first clarified that he was not Attorney General when Sam-Sumana was removed by former President Ernest Bai Koroma in 2015, but was serving as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Kamara also denied giving Koroma legal or political advice on the decision, saying his role at the time was largely removed from the politics surrounding the matter.
Asked for his personal assessment of Sam-Sumana’s removal as a legal practitioner, JFK was unequivocal:
“Personally, I don’t think I liked it, and I thought that the judges did not do justice to that decision.”
The former Justice Minister’s comments are notable given that he later served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice under the same administration.
In 2017, while Kamara was Attorney General, the ECOWAS Court ruled that Sam-Sumana’s removal had violated his rights and ordered Sierra Leone to pay his outstanding salary and benefits.
The Sierra Leone Government, through Kamara’s ministry, rejected the ECOWAS ruling, maintaining that the regional court lacked jurisdiction after the matter had already been determined by Sierra Leone’s Supreme Court.
Kamara, who is now an APC flagbearer aspirant, said that had he been president, he would have approached the matter differently.
His comments could reignite debate within the APC over one of the most controversial episodes of the Ernest Bai Koroma administration, particularly as the party prepares for its next leadership contest and the 2028 presidential election.
