Sierra Leone’s next general elections will be conducted in 2028, no later than October 12, the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) has disclosed.
Albert Massaquoi, Director of External Relations at the ECSL, made the disclosure while speaking on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone, providing an indication of the timeline for the country’s next electoral cycle.
Massaquoi said the Commission is preparing for the elections as part of its broader strategic planning and electoral management responsibilities.
He also revealed that the ECSL is reviewing certain provisions of the Public Elections Act, noting that some sections are frequently misinterpreted by members of the public.
“We have identified that certain provisions of the Public Elections Act are frequently misinterpreted by the public. Accordingly, we are conducting a review of these provisions to determine appropriate improvements,” Massaquoi said.
The review, he explained, forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s electoral framework and improve public understanding of electoral laws ahead of future elections.
Massaquoi further outlined the Commission’s strategic plan, which is built around five key pillars: institutional and staff development; electoral education, communication and participation; electoral operations; and ICT and data management systems.
The disclosure puts October 12, 2028, at the latest, as a key date on Sierra Leone’s electoral calendar, with preparations expected to continue across the Commission’s various operational and institutional areas.
