Sierra Leone’s Opposition Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has been appointed Chairman of the newly established Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Electoral Management Bodies, in line with Recommendation 20 of the Tripartite Committee Report.
The appointment, announced during the parliamentary sitting on Thursday, 23rd July 2026, forms part of ongoing efforts to implement the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee, which was established to promote electoral reforms and strengthen democratic governance in Sierra Leone.
Recommendation 20 of the report specifically provides for the Parliamentary Oversight Committee to be chaired by a Member of Parliament from the Opposition, a provision aimed at reinforcing transparency, impartiality and public confidence in the oversight of the country’s electoral institutions.
As Chairman, Hon. Kargbo will lead the committee in carrying out parliamentary oversight of Sierra Leone’s electoral management bodies. The committee is expected to monitor electoral preparedness, review institutional performance, support the implementation of electoral reforms and promote accountability, transparency and credibility within the country’s electoral system.
The establishment of the committee is widely regarded as a significant milestone in the implementation of the Tripartite Committee Report and reflects Parliament’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and fostering greater public trust in Sierra Leone’s electoral processes.
Political observers say the committee’s work will be crucial in ensuring that electoral management bodies operate independently, transparently and in accordance with the law, while supporting ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, democracy and good governance in the country.
