Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Haja Isata Abdulai-Kamara, spearheaded a series of unannounced raids in Kambia district and successfully intercepted various types of fish and shrimps being illegally smuggled at Gbalamuya border.

The raids were conducted in response to the growing concerns surrounding the banned on illegal smuggling, which poses a grave threat to both environmental sustainability and the economic stability of Sierra Leone’s fisheries industry.

The engagement in this illegal activity not only undermines the livelihoods of locals but also jeopardizes the delicate balance of Sierra Leone’s marine resources.

The intercepted consignment of illegally smuggled fish and shrimps will now be properly documented and utilized as crucial evidence in legal proceedings against the perpetrators. This will further strengthen efforts to enforce the ban on illegal smuggling and raise awareness among the general public about the consequences associated with these activities.

This proactive and swift action by the Deputy Minister and her team is not only a testament to their dedication but also demonstrates the government’s determination to combat illegal activities.

It sends a strong signal that Sierra Leone will take a firm stance against those who compromise the country’s marine resources and undermine its fishing industry.

The government urges the public to support and cooperate with the efforts to eradicate illegal smuggling and encourages individuals to report any suspicious activities that may contribute to the illegal trade.

The fisheries authorities have assured the public that further operations and monitoring will continue to ensure the sustainable management and protection of Sierra Leone’s fisheries and marine resources.

Sierra Leone is resolute in its commitment to curbing illegal smuggling and protecting its natural resources, underscoring the importance of responsible fishing practices both for the well-being of the environment and the prosperity of its people
