The High Commissioner of India to Sierra Leone, Mr Shri Baisnab Charan Pradhan, and an ace businessman and philanthropist, Mohinder Bir Singh Sachdeva, widely known as ‘Pa Jetty’, led a representation of the Indian Community in Sierra Leone at the 2025 Sick Pikin Marathon, where they successfully won the Gold Medal on Saturday, December 20.
Pa Jeety, CEO of Jetty Trading Company in Lumley, is a Gold Sponsor of the Sick Pikin Project, an initiative that supports children with severe medical conditions, many of whom require treatment abroad.
At this year’s Marathon, alongside the Indian Community, he actively participated in the marathon race from the National Stadium to Aberdeen Beach in support of the cause. The event was graced by the Indian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone and members of the Indian business community, who showed strong enthusiasm and support for the project by making substantial donations.
The Indian community in Sierra Leone, which has been present since the late 19th century, primarily consists of traders and business owners in sectors such as retail, agro-processing, and mining, numbering around 4,000 people today.
Represented by associations like the Indian Mercantile Association, they maintain cultural life through religious sites (Hindu temple, Sikh Gurudwara) and events, while also significantly contributing to Sierra Leone’s economy and philanthropy.
The Indian High Commission actively engages with thediaspora, supporting their cultural integration and addressing their concerns.
Pa Jetty is a prominent Sierra Leone-based philanthropist and CEO of the Jeety Group of Companies (also known as Jetty Trading Company). He is widely recognised for his extensive humanitarian work and community development efforts in the country.
Pa Jetty’s philanthropic activities, often conducted through the Shri Gurudwara Sahib Lumley and the Indian diaspora in Sierra Leone, include:
• Education: He is the founder of the annual Baba Guru Nanak Scholarship program, which provides financial support to hundreds of underprivileged children in Freetown.
• Food Security: His organisation runs the “Langar Sewa” (community kitchen) initiative, which provides free meals to over 1,200 people every Saturday.
• Healthcare and Aid: His efforts also include providing medical aid, clean water, and general support to disadvantaged communities.
• Media Support: He has been recognised by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) for his strong belief in and support for a free and vibrant media.
His work is inspired by the core Sikh teachings of honest work, meditation, and sharing with others (Wand Chhako).
