Sierra Leone’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources has officially unveiled the groundbreaking Artisanal Fishing Boats Registration App.

The App’s introduction signals a significant stride in simplifying boat registration, ultimately promoting sustainable fishing practices and driving economic prosperity within the fishing community.

Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba said the launch of the Artisanal Fishing Boats Registration App is a landmark achievement in Sierra Leone’s efforts to encourage responsible fishing practices.

She said her decision to introduce this innovative and user-friendly solution underscores her unwavering dedication to safeguarding the country’s abundant marine resources while equipping fishermen with the tools they need to prosper.

Minister Dugba emphasised that, under the country’s fisheries act and relevant legislation, fishing in territorial waters comes with specific payments and conditions, and this boat registration program extends to all landing sites across the nation.

Under this cutting-edge system, fishermen can now seamlessly register their boats and acquire the necessary licenses with increased efficiency. The digital platform streamlines the process, reducing bureaucratic obstacles, and allowing fishermen to dedicate more time to their livelihoods at sea, rather than grappling with administrative paperwork.

Furthermore, she highlighted that the app also serves as a hub for information and knowledge exchange among artisanal fishermen. It offers real-time updates, industry insights, and invaluable data regarding weather conditions, fishing zones, and best practices.

By fostering collaboration and communication, the app empowers fishermen to make well-informed decisions, refine their fishing techniques, and contribute to the promotion of sustainable fishing practices.

The unveiling of the Artisanal Fishing Boats Registration App elicited an enthusiastic response from both fishermen and industry professionals.

Local fishing communities perceive this initiative as a substantial leap towards attaining sustainable fishing practices, stimulating economic growth, and safeguarding their traditional way of life.

As Sierra Leone’s artisanal fishing community embraces this technological advancement, stakeholders anticipate a more inclusive and sustainable fishing industry that will significantly contribute to the nation’s overall economic growth and food security.
