In Sierra Leone, the widespread use of the synthetic drug Kush is wreaking havoc on communities, leading to devastating consequences. Despite pleas from various sectors for government’s intervention, the drug continues to proliferate, leaving many in a state of despair and calling for urgent action.

The latest act of shaving the heads of Kush victims across the country has raised several concerns with questions including; “how serious are Sierra Leoneans in the fight against Kush?”

The most dangerous part of the new human rights abuse practice on the victims, is when mostly their barbers use one razor blade to shave more than one person, disregarding their medical/health conditions.

Should any of those victims have health issue such as HIV and other ailments, the possibility for such to be transmitted to the other is hundred percent.

Already, Kush addicts are facing severe health complications, meting human rights abuses on them such as mob justice, assault and most recent shaving off the hair on their heads in a despicable manner is just wickedness and crude.

What does shaving their heads has to do with rehabilitation? Show me one victim that has recovered after shaving his/her head. Let us pay attention to the bigger picture of stopping its import and sale in Sierra Leone and not the distraction of shaving their heads.

The Kush cartel in Sierra Leone is a well calculated scheme and if not looked into, will eat into the fabrics of our society and slaughter our young people more than the decade long war, the Ebola and Corona put together.

This is the time for all and sundry to come together and save our future generation and say no to shaving, mobbing, political blame game or casting aspersions.

It is visible that the Government of Sierra Leone has made many positive moves to fight the killer drug but there is more to be done and that includes going after the importers and sellers of the drug.

Information has it that the Ministry of Information and Civic Education will soon be hosting a town-hall-styled press conference at Bintumani Conference Center featuring Ministries, Civil Society Organisations, opposition leaders, social groups, religious and community leaders to tackle the menace. It is hoped that this conference will help address the issue of this killer drug.
