A playful caption “No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital” has sparked a wider debate about Gen Z, social media culture and professionalism after a video involving nursing students at Madonna University went viral.

The students reportedly recorded the video during their hospital posting, prompting disciplinary action by the university. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) says 14 students were suspended, while one student, reportedly responsible for posting the video, was expelled.

NANS has appealed to the university to reconsider the expulsion, putting the incident back in the spotlight and raising questions about the consequences of students’ online behaviour.

But beyond the disciplinary measures, one question remains: Are Gen Z really the problem?

Gen Z has grown up in a digital age where recording, posting and creating content are part of everyday life. However, hospitals are professional environments where patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality and ethical standards must come first.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of balancing youthful self-expression with professional responsibility. A few seconds of online content can have consequences far beyond the original post, potentially affecting a student’s reputation, education and future career.

Rather than simply blaming an entire generation, the controversy also raises questions about whether schools and universities are doing enough to teach students about digital ethics, professional conduct and responsible content creation.

Perhaps the real issue is not whether Gen Z is the problem, but whether young people are adequately prepared for a world where one moment online can leave a lasting digital footprint.
