Presenting the Bill prior to ratification, the Minister of Water Resources, Momodu Maligie said among other things that the Act is seeking to provide for the equitable, beneficial, efficient, and sustainable use and management of the country’s water resources and other related matters.

The Bill was amended in line with the recommendations of its Legislative Committee, including multifarious fines not exceeding Le5, 000,000; not less than Le10, 000,000; and Le3, 000,000 respectively for various offences.

Some of the offences include the use of water resources otherwise than as permitted under this Act; failure to provide access to any records, documents, or assets required by this Act; failing to comply with any condition regarding the use of water permit; and intentionally refusing to perform a duty or obstructing any other person in the performance or exercise of any power or duties under this Act.
