The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone has raised serious concerns over increasing hate speech and political divisiveness, warning that such rhetoric could undermine the country’s hard-earned peace and unity.
In a statement, the Council noted that inflammatory remarks by political leaders, party supporters, and social media users are becoming more frequent and harmful, creating tension and fear in public discourse. It cautioned that such language, if left unchecked, could erode the foundation of national cohesion.
The IRCSL highlighted Sierra Leone’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance, where Muslims and Christians have coexisted peacefully for decades, stressing that citizens expect similar respect and tolerance from political actors across party lines.
The Council further emphasized that the country’s peace and democratic stability were achieved through immense sacrifice, and should not be jeopardized by careless statements that promote hatred, mistrust, and division. It strongly condemned the use of abusive language, particularly insults directed at the mothers of political opponents, describing such conduct as disrespectful and unacceptable.
Raising concerns about the impact on young people, the IRCSL noted that children and youth are increasingly exposed to toxic political content online, urging adults and public figures to demonstrate responsible leadership and uphold moral standards.
While reaffirming the right to freedom of expression, the Council called on citizens to exercise that right responsibly and respectfully. It also urged key institutions, including the Political Party Regulation Commission, the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to take firm and impartial action against individuals who promote hate speech and incitement.
The IRCSL concluded by calling on all Sierra Leoneans to choose dialogue over confrontation and unity over division, reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace, tolerance, and national cohesion across the country.
