The Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE), one of the partners under the Enhancing the Learning Models and Opportunities (ELMO) project is running an enriching series of workshops and guest lectures across Sierra Leone from April to May. These are aimed at understanding the experiences and fostering the professional development of women engineering students and engineers with a gender perspective. An inspiring guest lecture and panel discussion on the topic “Getting Ready for the Workplace”, held on May 1st, 2024, marked a significant milestone as SLIE focused on preparing engineering graduates from the Fourah Bay College (FBC) for the dynamic challenges of the future workplace.

The guest lecture and panel discussion underscored the indispensable role of seasoned professionals in shaping the trajectory of both budding and already long-practicing engineers. With a keen emphasis on knowledge transfer and practical insights, participants had the invaluable opportunity to glean wisdom from esteemed guest speaker, Ing. Velma Labor. Ing. Labor, renowned for her leadership in the field, delivered a compelling address, illuminating the pathways to success in the engineering domain.

Complementing Ing. Labor’s keynote, a distinguished panel comprising Ing. Tatiana Sesay, Ing.  Davephine Tholley and Ing. Captain Abibatu Kabia shared their expertise and wealth of experiences and professional insights. Their candid discussion elucidated the intricacies of navigating the engineering landscape, offering invaluable advice to attendees at various stages of their careers. Facilitating the engaging dialogue was the esteemed moderator Ing. Magdalene Peters, whose adept facilitation ensured a seamless exchange of ideas and perspectives throughout the session.

The presence of Ing. Trudy Morgan, President of SLIE, underscored the Institution’s steadfast commitment to nurturing engineering excellence and fostering a collaborative community of professionals dedicated to driving positive change in Sierra Leone.

The workshop not only served as a platform for knowledge dissemination but also fostered a spirit of camaraderie and collaboration among engineering professionals. Participants, including both aspiring graduates and seasoned practitioners, benefited from the exchange of ideas and best practices, enriching the fabric of the engineering community in Sierra Leone.

As SLIE alongside its partners continues its commitment to advancing engineering excellence in Sierra Leone, the workshops, guest lectures and panel discussions running from April – May stands as a testament to the Institution’s unwavering dedication to nurturing the next generation of engineering leaders.
