Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has launched an investigation into the alleged misuse of official documents in connection with a visa request, following concerns raised by former ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Rt. Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis over his recent U.S. visa interview.
In a September 3 letter, Tunis requested an investigation after a U.S. Embassy consular officer questioned him about Chapator Bah, whom he was told had been requested in 2023 to obtain a U.S. visa as Executive Assistant to the ECOWAS Parliament Speaker.
Tunis denied ever having an Executive Assistant by that name during his tenure and said he was informed that Bah allegedly travelled to the United States and failed to return to Sierra Leone.
Describing the situation as embarrassing, Tunis called on the Ministry to establish how the visa request was made and what information was provided to U.S. authorities.
In a September 5 press release, the Ministry confirmed receiving a formal complaint over the alleged unauthorized use or manipulation of official correspondence for visa procurement.
The Minister has since established an internal committee to review the relevant documents and procedures, determine the facts, identify possible institutional weaknesses and strengthen safeguards around official correspondence.
The Ministry says anyone found to have breached procedures will face strict administrative or legal action, stressing that the investigation will be conducted with accountability and transparency.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no individual has been officially found guilty of wrongdoing.
