Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has disclosed that Sierra Leone has successfully reduced maternal mortality by 79% owing to developments that have taken place in the health sector since they came to power seven years ago.
VP Juldeh Jalloh made the disclosure on Friday 14th November 2025, when he was officially commissioning the new uItra modern Aberdeen Community Police Division on behalf of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone.
The Honourable Vice President likened his disclosure to progressive leadership and loyalty to the people you serve, which he said is based on service and delivery, not by force.
VP Juldeh Jalloh recalled that each he visited the Cottage Hospital in Freetown, the Matron and Nursing Sister would explain the difficulties they were going through seven to ten years ago, when they would offer special prayers for pregnant women who had come to deliver before they would start delivering them.
The Honourable Vice President continued that he has now learnt from the medical staff at the Cottage Hospital that the narrative has been changed as all machines to ensure that pregnant women deliver safely are now available in the hospital, including oxygen machine and blood bank.
Maternal mortality is the number of deaths during a given time period per 100,000 live births during the same time period.
Causes of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) include excessive bleeding during childbirth or postpartum period, which is a leading cause of maternal mortality. It can result from complications like placenta previa, placental abruption, or uterine atony.
