The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) linking South Korea’s Yeungnam University with Sierra Leone’s Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU)and Eastern Technical University (ETU).
The agreements mark a significant step in advancing the government’s education agenda, in line with the vision of President Julius Maada Bio, who continues to prioritize education as a driver of national development.
Dr. Wurie was accompanied at the signing ceremony by the Permanent Secretary, Mohamed Sheick Kargbo, and the Acting Director of Research, Planning and Development, Idrissa Sannoh.
She noted that the partnership goes beyond academic exchange, highlighting the guiding philosophy behind it. She explained that the adoption of Saemaul UndongPrinciples, centered on diligence, self-help, and cooperation, offers a practical model for community-driven development, aimed at strengthening local economies and building long-term resilience.
She emphasized that sustained investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) remains critical to equipping young people with practical, market-relevant skills. This, she said, will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the economy and play an active role in shaping the country’s future.
Describing the agreements as more than symbolic, the Minister said they represent a clear commitment to empowering youth, strengthening communities, and accelerating national progress.
Dr. Wurie also expressed appreciation to President Choi Oe-chool of Yeungnam University for his leadership, and to His Excellency Ambassador Paul SobbaMassaquoi, along with the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Seoul, for their role in facilitating the partnership.
