The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and other stakeholders, with support from the European Union, has convened a one-day Agricultural Insurance Workshop at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown.
With the aims to support the policy formulation process for agricultural insurance in Sierra Leone, bringing together key stakeholders to explore opportunities, challenges, and practical approaches for expanding agricultural insurance coverage across the country leveraging from other countries experiences .
Representing the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, the Director of the Planning, Evaluation, Monitoring and Statistics Division (PEMSD), Umaru Sankoh, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the development of policies and mechanisms that enhance agricultural finance, in line with Pillar #4 of the Government’s Feed Salone Agenda.
Discussions were focused on how agricultural insurance products function, the risks they cover, and their potential to help farmers manage challenges associated with climate change, pests, diseases, and other production-related shocks. Participants are also examined how agricultural insurance can promote investment, strengthen resilience, and contribute to sustainable agricultural growth.
The workshop brought together representatives from government institutions, financial service providers, insurance companies, development partners, farmer-based organizations, and other key stakeholders committed to strengthening Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector and advancing the objectives of the Feed Salone Transformation Agenda.
