Lamin Unisa Kamara told this reporter that a good number of young people in the district have become addicted to Tramadol and that the high rate at which the drug is affecting the young generation in the district is worrisome.

According to him, the drug is being smuggled into the district through porous border crossing points between Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Lamin went on to say the ugly development has led to several loss of lives and properties of residents across the district as according to him, whenever there is an abuse of the drug, the negative effect is abusers go wild to an extent of chasing people with knives, sticks and machetes.

He cited a scenario where a young man set ablaze a whole village and stabbed some of his households including his grandmother and kid sister to death after overdosing the drug that negatively reacted on him.

He concluded that if such abuse continues uncontrolled, the district will have its young people going mad and called on government and the relevant health authorities to speedily intervene and save the district from a pending calamity.

Registrar of the Sierra Leone Pharmacy Board, Wiltshire C. N. Johnson also recently told newsmen that research has proven that the excessive consumptions of Tramadol by young people in the country is responsible for major violence that are taking place in the country.

He said many people in the country should now aware of the dangers of the misused of drugs, adding that the fight against drug abuse and drug peddling is a continuous process that needs the supports of government and key stakeholders.

Both government and private business people he went on are doing their best to import good drugs into the country but many of the citizens are misusing the drugs by consuming the wrong drugs and eventually causing harm to themselves.

Quite recently, the World Health Organization reported that the highest prevalence of drug use is being reported in West and Central Africa with rates between 5.2 percent and 13.5 percent.
