The Ministry of Transport and Aviation, in collaboration with the Motor Drivers Union, the Security Sector, and other key transport stakeholders, has announced the temporary opening of Freetown’s East and West corridors to improve traffic flow and facilitate the movement of vehicles and passengers across the city.
This intervention comes in response to the insufficient number of Waka Fine buses to meet the growing transportation needs of Freetown’s expanding population. The temporary measure aims to reduce congestion, minimise travel delays, and ease the burden on commuters and businesses.
Effective yesterday Wednesday, 5th November 2025, the East-West transit route was to be operated under the following arrangements:
– Commercial vehicles, including buses, Poda Podas, and tricycles (Kekehs), are now allowed to use the East and West corridors throughout the day.
– Commercial motorbikes are prohibited from entering the Central Business District (CBD).
– Waka Fine bus stops are to be used exclusively by Waka Fine buses.
The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and other transport stakeholders will conduct extensive awareness campaigns in all transport parks to educate drivers on traffic laws and regulations.
Authorities emphasised that these temporary measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety, improve commuter experience, and ensure a smoother transportation system in Freetown.
