In a recent statement, the United States Embassy in Freetown expressed robust support for President Julius Maada Bio’s impassioned plea for national unity, urging all Sierra Leoneans to unite for the collective good.

The embassy solemnly commemorated the lives lost in yesterday’s defense of Sierra Leone’s Constitution and government.

“We honor and remember those who gave their lives yesterday in defense of Sierra Leone’s Constitution and government,” the embassy stated.

Emphasizing the need for accountability, the embassy called for those responsible for the tragic attacks to be held answerable through due process and adherence to the rule of law.

“We call for those responsible for these heinous attacks to be held accountable in accordance with due process and the rule of law,” the statement read.

Applauding leaders from diverse political backgrounds for their bravery in condemning violence, the embassy pledged ongoing collaboration with the Sierra Leonean Government and its people. The partnership aims to advance democracy, enhance health initiatives, and foster prosperity within the nation.

“We commend leaders from across the political spectrum for their courage in speaking out against violence, and we will continue to work in partnership with the Government and the people of Sierra Leone to advance democracy, health, and prosperity,” the embassy affirmed.

In a solemn address to the nation on Sunday evening, President Bio assured the nation that a combined team of government security forces swiftly responded, apprehending most of the attackers and restoring calm. He emphasized ongoing security operations and investigations, promising accountability through due process for those responsible.

Acknowledging the bravery and dedication of the armed forces, police, and all involved in quelling the disturbance, President Bio expressed gratitude, saying, “Their commitment to the defense of our democracy deserves our deepest gratitude.” He thanked citizens for complying with security measures and urged continued vigilance and cooperation with security forces.

President Bio urged political leaders, traditional leaders, civil society, and citizens to collaborate in preserving the nation’s peace.

“As your Commander-in-Chief, I want to assure everybody who is resident in Sierra Leone that we have overcome this challenge,” President Bio declared. He concluded the address with a call for solidarity, expressing confidence that the nation would continue on the path of progress and development.
