The Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nuwais, has commended Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, for her outstanding leadership and commitment to advancing sustainable tourism development and promoting Sierra Leone as an emerging tourism destination.
The recognition was made during the 69th Session of the UN Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF) held in Mahé, Seychelles, from 2–4 July 2026.
In her remarks, Shaikha Al Nuwais described Minister Tunis as a strategic, visionary, and innovative leader, whose efforts continue to contribute to tourism growth through sustainable policies, destination development, and strengthened international collaboration.
She highlighted Sierra Leone’s progress in building a tourism sector that promotes economic opportunities, cultural preservation, and inclusive development, while recognizing the Ministry’s commitment to creating a competitive tourism environment.
The UN Tourism Secretary-General also praised Minister Tunis for championing initiatives that empower women across the tourism value chain. Through mentorship programmes, leadership development, and capacity-building efforts, the Ministry has expanded opportunities for women to actively participate in the tourism and hospitality industry.
According to UN Tourism, these interventions are contributing to inclusive economic growth, community empowerment, and sustainable development within Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.
A major highlight of the Commission meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the December Gastronomy Event, which Sierra Leone is expected to host.
The agreement reinforces Sierra Leone’s growing international profile and commitment to promoting culinary tourism, cultural heritage, and destination branding through strategic partnerships with UN Tourism and other global stakeholders.
The commendation from UN Tourism’s Secretary-General further highlights Sierra Leone’s progress in developing a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism sector under the leadership of Minister NabeelaFarida Tunis.
It also reflects the country’s increasing visibility as a tourism destination committed to preserving its rich cultural heritage while using tourism as a catalyst for economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable national development.
