The West African Examinations Council has officially announced the reintroduction of live practical examinations for the 2026 WASSCE (school candidates), marking a significant return to hands-on science assessment across the region.
The decision means that students will once again conduct real laboratory experiments in core science subjects, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Agriculture—restoring a system that was in place prior to 2015.
Practical examinations were suspended during the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, when WAEC introduced the “Test of Practical” (Alternative to Practical) as a safer and more flexible approach. Under that system, candidates responded to theory-based questions instead of physically performing experiments.
With improved health conditions and increased readiness of schools, WAEC says the return to laboratory-based assessments will enhance the quality of science education and better equip students with essential practical skills.
The Council clarified that the new policy applies only to school (government) candidates, while private candidates will, for now, continue with the Alternative to Practical format.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that it will strengthen students’ understanding of scientific concepts, improve critical thinking, and better prepare them for higher education and real-world applications in science and technology.
