The World Bank has praised ongoing progress on the construction of the Manowa Bridge in eastern Sierra Leone, describing the project as a key investment in rural infrastructure and economic development.
The bridge is being implemented under the Smallholder Commercialisation and Agribusiness Development Project, with technical support from the Sierra Leone Roads Authority.
During an inspection visit on Sunday, April 26, a World Bank delegation led by Executive Director Zarau Kibwe toured the project site alongside officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Ministry of Finance, and the Project Coordination Unit.
The team assessed progress on the 180-metre bridge and its 250-metre approach roads, which are expected to replace the current manual cable ferry crossing, long considered a risk for residents and traders.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Musa Kpaka, expressed appreciation for the project, noting that it will significantly improve farmers’ ability to transport produce to regional markets, thereby boosting incomes and strengthening smallholder livelihoods.
Project officials revealed that the initiative has already reached 155,632 direct beneficiaries, including 67,717 women, representing 44 percent participation, exceeding the initial target of 40 percent.
Local authorities have also welcomed the development. Chiefdom Secretary of the Kailahun Paramount Chiefs Council, Foday Musa Nyandebo-gbogboto Gahn, said the bridge will enhance access to healthcare, education, and markets, while reducing travel time, lowering costs, and improving safety for farmers, traders, and schoolchildren.
He added that the project will eliminate the dangers associated with ferry crossings once completed.
While commending the overall progress, Ms. Kibwedescribed project implementation and management as satisfactory but urged authorities to address community concerns, particularly regarding the condition of approach roads to ensure full accessibility.
The Manowa Bridge project is widely seen as a transformative intervention that will benefit both Kailahunand Kenema districts by improving connectivity, enhancing safety, and unlocking economic opportunities for thousands of Sierra Leoneans engaged in agriculture and trade.
