The second accused, Alikalie Sesay who is a businessman at the country’s main black market in Freetown popularly referred to as ‘Belguim’ is also alleged to have bought the said stolen iphone, and was charged with the offence of Receiving stolen good, contrary to Section (33) sub Section (1) of the larceny act of 1916.

Ambassador Maria Brewa was allegedly robbed of her mobile phone between the date of Thursday 7 December 2017 and 1st January 2018 within the vicinity of the Sierra Leone Parliament, in the Freetown judicial district in the Republic of Sierra Leone.

In his application for bail, Counsel for both accused persons, Julian Cole canvassed that his Clients are ordinarily resident in Sierra Leone, and the presumption of innocence favors granting to accused persons in the dock.

He assured the court that they have credible and reliable sureties who are ready and willing to enter into recognizance on their behalf.

Lawyer Julian Cole furthered that his Clients are not flight risk and wish not to make a heavy weather, because the Constitution of Sierra Leone states that an accused person has the right to fair hearing and clearly contemplates expeditious proceedings.

‘Since the matter was charged to court, the prosecution has not come forward with a single witness to testify , and beside that, his Clients spent twelve days in police cell, before charges were preferred and eventually charged to court and granting bail to the accused persons would not in any way defeat the cause of justice,’ said Lawyer Cole.

In the light of Lawyer Julian Cole’s humble application for bail on behalf of both accused persons, the presiding Magistrate, Albert Moody responded in the negative and ordered that both accused persons be relocated at the Male Correctional Centre on Pademba road in the west part of Freetown.

The matter was adjourned to Friday 26 January 2018.
