In celebration of its 14th anniversary, the ECOWAS Volunteer Programme (EVP) in Sierra Leone organized its second championship debate competition for secondary schools in Freetown, marking a milestone in promoting critical thinking and public speaking skills among students. The event, held at the MOPED Conference room, featured spirited debates among selected schools, including Services Secondary School, Freetown Secondary School for Girls, and St. Joseph’s Covenant School.
Students tackled a range of contemporary issues, from the implementation of policies to incentivize private sector investment in youth-led initiatives to addressing drug abuse among youths and combating gender bias in modern society. With impressive debating skills and well-researched arguments, participants captivated the audience and demonstrated their intellectual prowess.
A distinguished judging panel, comprising education experts and representatives from organizations such as VIONET and YCEF, meticulously evaluated the performances, acknowledging the outstanding contributions of students in advancing insightful discussions.
In the culmination of the competition, St. Joseph’s Covenant School emerged as the overall winners, with Freetown Secondary School for Girls securing second place and Services Secondary School finishing in third place. Miss Fatimata Saiyonattu Kamara led the winning team, earning them a trophy and certificates of recognition for their exceptional performance. Additionally, Miss Grace Brown and Miss Kadijah Jalloh from St. Joseph’s Covenant School were lauded as top debaters for their remarkable contributions.
Beyond the accolades, the EVP 2nd championship debate competition served as a platform for fostering camaraderie and intellectual engagement among students. It underscored the importance of nurturing critical thinking and public speaking skills in the education system, reaffirming the EVP’s commitment to promoting youth empowerment and leadership development in Sierra Leone.
