In collaboration with the Government of Ireland, the Embassy of Iceland, ENDEV, the EU, German Cooperation GIZ, Trócaire, KADDRO, Easy Solar, and the Government of Sierra Leone, Hon. Dr. Alhaji Kandeh K Yumkella, Chairman of PI-CREF and a leader in Sierra Leone’s energy sector, announced the launch of “Lite Salone” in Kambia District. This initiative represents a significant advancement in delivering clean, affordable solar energy to rural communities, aiming to empower these communities, enhance climate resilience, and improve education, economic opportunities, and health outcomes. It aligns with President Bio’s vision for renewable energy, promoting a sustainable and prosperous future, especially for rural regions.

Sierra Leone’s energy sector heavily depends on biomass, and the national grid’s reach is limited, leaving many rural households without reliable electricity. To address these issues, the Government of Sierra Leone has prioritized renewable energy solutions, focusing on solar power, and is developing strategies to broaden access despite financial and technical constraints, which necessitate private sector and community participation. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella explained to stakeholders and community members at the official launch that the Lite Salone pilot is contributing to these efforts.
Between December 2024 and January 2026, approximately 10,000 households in Kambia District will receive solar energy kits and lamps. Most will pay a flat monthly fee of SLE 60 for the solar kits, while the bottom 10% of households, identified through a community-led wealth ranking, will receive free solar lamps.
