In a proactive move to address the rising incidents of child thefts at hospitals nationwide, Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, has taken decisive action by installing CCTV cameras at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital Cottage in Freetown. The installation, carried out on Saturday, 21 June 2025, specifically targets strategic locations within the hospital, with particular focus on the Baby Care Unit.
The newly installed smart CCTV cameras are equipped with advanced features, including real-time viewing, rotation, recording, and snapping capabilities. Powered by solar energy, these cameras are designed to operate effectively and reliably, ensuring continuous surveillance.
The initiative has garnered positive reactions from both mothers and medical practitioners. Mothers expressed their gratitude and praised IGP Sellu for prioritising the safety of their babies, acknowledging that the security measures provide peace of mind during their hospital stay. Medical professionals also commended the timely implementation, emphasising that the surveillance system will help restore trust in healthcare services and promote a safer environment for newborns.
Hospital authorities assured the police chief and the public that a comprehensive monitoring mechanism will be established to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the CCTV system. They reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the welfare of the infants and enhancing security within the hospital premises.
