Sierra Leone has confirmed that 17 of its nationals, 14 men and three women, are among those killed in the deadly landfill landslide at Dar-es-Salam in Conakry, Guinea.
The victims were identified through a joint exercise involving Guinean authorities and officials from the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Conakry, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Guinean authorities have so far reported 34 fatalities, although the figure could change as recovery and identification efforts continue.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Leonean Embassy has confirmed 54 Sierra Leonean survivors, comprising 32 women, 17 men and five minors. Survivors have received immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, clothing and other essential supplies.
The tragedy has left families in both Sierra Leone and Guinea waiting for further confirmation about loved ones who may still be missing.
The Sierra Leone Government has urged the public to avoid sharing unverified names, photographs or casualty figures, stressing that the situation remains sensitive and continues to evolve.
Sierra Leone has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the Government and people of Guinea as recovery efforts continue.
