The Ceremony which was held at the Committee Room of Fourah Bay College brought together students from IPAM, FBC and COMAHS , education stakeholders from the university and representatives from the embassy in Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the ceremony,  the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Ekundayo Thompson thanked the Chinese Ambassador and the People’s Republic of China for their contributions to health and education in Sierra Leone. He said on Tuesday 15th December he attended a programme organized by the Chinese Embassy to bade farewell to some students of the University of Sierra Leone as they depart for China for the 2015 Camp in China. Professor Thompson said that China has invested a lot into Africa and the tie between the University of Sierra Leone and the Chinese Embassy has led to the setting up of the Confucius institute at FBC. He thanked the Chinese Embassy for awarding US$1000 to each of the fifteen students and however hoped that the closed tie between China and the University of Sierra Leone would continue to exist in ensuring the ideal atmosphere is created to do business.

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Fourah Bay College, Professor Gbamanga said that the fifteen scholarships awarded were given to students with high academic performance from various departments and faculties of the three constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone; FBC,IPAM and COMAHS. He however, asked those students who are yet to pay their fees and register to do so now that they have been awarded scholarships by the Chinese Embassy.

Presenting the awards to the recipients, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao- Yambo says the scholarship is a symbol of friendship to cement the bond that has exists between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China long before Sierra Leone even got her independence. He said that the scholarships given to students with high academic performance will play a positive role in boosting education  in Sierra Leone Ambassador  Zhao-Yambo however, encouraged recipients of the scholarships to work harder and further donated some books to the University of Sierra Leone which he said will be sent to the university authorities after the programme.
