The Chinese Medical Team to Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in the country through the donation of Lassa fever vaccines and other critical medical supplies to the Ministry of Health. The support marks another significant milestone in the growing health cooperation between China and Sierra Leone.
The donation was presented by Dr. Li Zheng, Leader of the 27th Chinese Medical Team to Sierra Leone, who emphasized China’s continued support to Sierra Leone’s healthcare sector and its efforts to combat infectious diseases. The intervention comes at a crucial time as health authorities intensify measures to tackle the spread of Lassa fever across the country.
Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus, remains a major public health concern in Sierra Leone and across West Africa. The disease is primarily transmitted through contact with urine or feces of infected Mastomys rats, as well as through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons. Although historically common in the eastern region, cases are now being reported throughout the year in several parts of Sierra Leone.
Speaking during the presentation, Sierra Leone’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sartie Kenneh, described the Chinese support as timely, important, and highly beneficial to the country’s response efforts. He praised the Chinese Medical Team for its continued partnership and contribution to strengthening Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.
Dr. Kenneh noted that the Government of Sierra Leone has made progress in improving clinical management, enhancing public awareness, and increasing preparedness toward vaccine deployment and emergency response measures. He added that collaboration with international partners such as China remains essential in addressing public health challenges.
Health experts say factors such as delayed healthcare seeking, geographic location, and the condition of patients upon hospital admission continue to influence the prevalence and impact of Lassa fever in Sierra Leone. The support from the Chinese Medical Team is therefore expected to strengthen response capacity and improve healthcare outcomes.
The Chinese Medical Team has continued to play an important role in supporting medical services, capacity building, and public health interventions in Sierra Leone. Their latest intervention on Lassa fever further demonstrates China’s longstanding commitment to supporting the country’s healthcare development and disease prevention efforts.
