The Basic Education Secretariat of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education has concluded a nationwide on-the-spot and real-time field monitoring on compliance to the agreed cut-off lines during the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Placement meetings.

The on-the- spot post placement visit to all oversubscribed Senior Secondary Schools across the country was jointly conducted by the Basic Education Secretariat, Free quality School Education Secretariat, Situation Room, School Quality Assurance Management and Resources (SQAMR), National Learning Assessment (NLA) and the Education Radio.

The purpose of this on-the- spot and real-time post placement monitoring exercise is to follow-up on real-time from schools; whether or not Principals followed the agreement on cut-off lines during the placement meetings, admitted pupils above the agreed cut-off lines, admitted below or above the quota given to the Ministry by the Principals themselves as the available spaces, check if there are more spaces for admission in some of these schools in order to help the Basic Secretariat utilise them for some more placement of pupils who missed out of their three choices of schools, check if the five new stream are correctly implemented and to learn from the Principals first-hand about their challenges during the admission process.

In the debriefing meeting, the Executive Secretary, Basic Education Secretariat, MBSSE, Dr. Josephine Ladipo called for more Inter-Unit collaboration to put to bed the awful allegations making the rounds on social and traditional media about some Principals as they admit pupils who passed for their respective schools.

As you may recall, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education is currently investigating Principals of oversubscribed schools in Freetown on all of the above indicators monitored by the Basic Education Secretariat at the broader scope. The on-the-spot check is conducted nationwide with the sole intention to eliminate corruption in the admission process across all schools.
