John Hopkins University has been a strong partner in supporting health improvement in Sierra Leone. The work of the University was visible with the Anastasia project at Connaught Hospital, which trained staff during the Ebola and Corona outbreaks in Sierra Leone.
In continuation of its support to improving health service delivery, the University has handed over the solar panel project to the Bo Government Hospital to improve the electricity supply to the hospital.
Tamba Wonder Ansumana Logistic Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins University said on behalf of his organization the installation of the Solar Energy system they are about to do will improve the critical care of many and save lives within the community.
Ansumana reiterated that as Sierra Leone has been chosen as the first to receive such support under the Hopkins project in the USA, their aim is to provide sustainable energy to Bo government hospital and that they are working with the Ministry of Health to facilitate and abide by all policies from the ministry.
Maurice Ferenkeh Koroma special adviser to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on Program Quality emphasized the impact of this project on the ministry saying that this will boost the electricity constraint in the Bo government hospital.
Koroma further stated that their aim was to change the health trajectory as they are about to power every government hospital with sustainable electricity. He says they’ve already done that in six government hospitals, PCMH, Holadory, Masanga, Kambia, and Kabala.
Dr. Osman Kakay Medical Superintendent of Bo Government Hospital said Electricity constraint is one of the major challenges the Bo Government Hospital has faced.
Kakay further stated that on several occasions while operating on a patient, they must have a blackout, but this project will remedy the situation.
Abubakarr Sow managing Partner at the Felicity Solar Technology SL Limited, after he won the contractor bid, assured the ministry and John Hopkins to finish the project on time saying this wasn’t the first time he handled a solar project at the Bo government hospital.
