Kambia Government Hospital has recorded 65 days with zero Maternal Deaths. The hospital was initially struggling with high maternal mortality rates and women in labor often had to travel long distances to access proper medical care. This has been resulting in delays and complications.

Medical Superintendent of Kambia Government Hospital, Dr. Songor Koedoyoma said the lack of resources and trained medical personnel was highly responsible for the sad situation but that his administration has taken a remarkable transformation in the hospital.

He said in a period of 65 days, the hospital has achieved zero maternal deaths, a feat that was once unthinkable. This achievement according to Dr. Songor, is his administration’s dedication, expertise, and tireless efforts to improve healthcare in the region.

He said their impact on the hospital and the community cannot be overemphasised, adding that he has implemented crucial changes, such as improving the availability of essential medical supplies and equipment, enhancing the training and skills of the hospital staff.

He said he has also establishing efficient protocols for emergency Obstetric Care and that his leadership and commitment have inspired the entire hospital team to work diligently towards saving lives and ensuring the well-being of mothers and their babies.

The community is now calling on the government to provide continued support to the hospital and its staff.

“Adequate funding and resources are needed to sustain the progress achieved and further improve healthcare services in Kambia…” a community stakeholder stated.

He added that: “The success of Kambia Government Hospital under Dr. Songor’s leadership serves as a shining example for other healthcare facilities across the country. It demonstrates that with the right leadership, dedication, and support, significant improvements in maternal and child health outcomes are possible.

“The government must recognise the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure and personnel, particularly in underserved areas like Kambia. By providing the necessary resources and support, the government can ensure that more lives are saved, and communities thrive”.

The achievement of zero maternal deaths in just 65 days at Kambia Government Hospital is a remarkable milestone.
