The Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray has visited the National Stadium rehabilitation site in Freetown to assess the state of affairs in terms of workers’ welfare and output.
This is coming amidst concerns over issues about working conditions and workers’ safety, raised by the Indigenous Workers’ Union (the Union that covers Sierra Leoneans working at the site).
Mr. Swaray held engagements with the Ministry of Sports; the key supervisor of the rehabilitation project, the management of the GANSU Construction Company; the Chinese company handling the project, and the Sierra Leonean workers.
He addressed concerns ranging from non-payment of the national minimum wage, medical for workers, provision of personal protective gear, and mode of payment, amongst others.
The minister explained to the workers that it is his responsibility to ensure that they (workers) are safe and that they are remunerated appropriately, as the Government of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio strives to provide decent work for its citizens.
“The President is keen to ensure we develop our human capital the people are our best asset as a country. The President wants me to address your concerns as soon as possible. I want to assure you that, we will care for your welfare”. Mr. Swaray assured the workers.
He admonished them to ensure that they complete their tasks dutifully and be at work when they should be, while assuring that he would visit the site often to see how things were improving.
