There has been a massive turnout of pupils and teachers in Schools on the first day of 2023/2024 Academic Year.

Prior to the reopening of schools, the education ministry met with the leadership of the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU), the National Council of Head Teachers (NACOHT) and the Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (CPSS) put plans in place for the reopening of Schools for the 2023/2024 academic year.

There has been the notion of pupils and teachers refusing to attend school on the first day of school reopening, and they will have to give themselves a week before going to school.

Deputy Minister II of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Mamusu Patricia Massaquoi called on pupils and teachers that are absent for Day One to join the others and attend school for Day Two and the rest of the academic year.

She commended the parents that accompany their children to school, especially the JSS 1 students that are attending a new school for the first time. She encouraged them not only to stop their visitation on Day-One but also continue to do that more often as this will improve the performance of their children.

Deputy Director of Western Urban in the Inspectorate Division of the ministry, Sahr Syvanus Kebbie said all the schools he visited thus far are in their full session with over 80% attendance.

He promised that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary school Education will continue to do its best in ensuring that, the quality of the education is maintained.

Agatha H.Y. Macfoy, Principal of the Prince of Wales Junior Secondary School affirmed continued punctuality of her pupils, assuring parents and all Sierra Leoneans of the best in their children.

“I am happy with the safe environment, and the manner in which classes are ongoing during the first day of school”, a parent Sahr Sandi said.

Bernadette Udeh is a Pupils of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls expressed joy on her return to school. She said classes start in the early hours of the first day at their school and was happy about learning during the first day at school after about two months recess.
