Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has said school meals are essential to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s Transforming Education agenda.

He said in addition to providing food for 8 boarding schools, and periodically supplying 15+ special needs institutions (outside of their yearly subvention), the government is feeding seven hundred and forty-eight thousand kids nationwide through its partners, adding that 85% of that comes from the Government of Sierra Leone basket.

“This is how we help support families as well. Today, we’re deep into planning for next year!

“Two hundred and fifty thousand students recently sat to their West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Sierra Leone this year. Many of them will transition to technical and higher education because of the work they and their teachers put in!

“Staff at the Ministry of Basic Education have gone through a detailed and comprehensive review of the draft the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) Bill. This law will significantly improve how our examinations are run.

“We had started the review and update of 4 main laws in Sierra Leone during the last few years. We successfully developed the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Act (2023) during the last Parliament, and are now putting finishing touches to updating the WAEC Act (1984).

“This might be one of the first laws to be passed by the new Parliament!! We are about to enter drafting of the updated Teaching Service Commission Act (2011) before rounding up with the already drafted Sierra Leone Library Board Act.

“All these laws are being done in consultation with experts and all major constituents of society. They underpin the revolution happening in our sector” Dr. Sengeh stated.
