Ahead of the big African Union (AU) Session in Ethiopia, West Africa’s Foreign Ministers, led by Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, got down to holding a serious conclave meeting with counterparts. As Chair of the ECOWAS Executive Council, he pulled colleagues together for what is seen to be a real show of unity in hashing out who would represent the region on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.
These talks do matter. The AUPSC, where tough calls are made on conflicts, peacekeeping, and keeping the continent stable, has Sierra Leone occupying One out of Four seats for West Africa, thanks to the skilled diplomacy displayed by Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister – after straight talks.
This is no small feet to achieve. Time and time again, H.E. Alhaji Timothy Kabba, has led sessions, pointing to Sierra Leone’s solid track record – from stepping up big in the UN Security Council to now doing strong work on the AUPSC. This endorsement was unanimous, with a clear nod to the country’s push for peace, mediation, and real leadership across the region.
President Julius Maada Bio’s guidance as ECOWAS Chair has helped in making this happen too. This is more than a country getting all a seat from the West African Region – it is a proof that when Sierra Leone lines up behind a shared goal, the results follow and with the right Leadership behind it.
Sierra Leone now heads back to the table, ready to keep championing conflict prevention, Sahel stability, and African-led solutions. For a nation which has turned its own hard history into strength and victories, this renewed role feels like the next natural step it deserves.
