Representatives from the Global Youth Network for Empowerment and Development have underscored the importance of building self-worth and addressing mental health challenges among women during a seminar held in Freetown.

The engagement, organised by TEAS Tech Foundation in collaboration with SHE4Peace, brought together mental health experts, civil society organisations, and participants to discuss issues affecting women’s wellbeing, including societal pressures, stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Project Coordinator and Youth Mental Health Champion, Saffie Eunice Dumbuya, said the seminar created a platform for meaningful dialogue and learning. She noted that facilitators led in-depth sessions on self-esteem, confidence, and identity, equipping participants with tools to better understand and manage mental health challenges.

According to Madam Dumbuya, discussions also focused on identifying the causes and warning signs of stress and trauma, while offering practical approaches to healing and emotional safety. Participants were introduced to healthy coping mechanisms and encouraged to create supportive environments where women can safely express themselves and recover from emotional distress.

The seminar also featured reflective activities, including poetry sessions that allowed participants to connect emotionally with the topics discussed. Interactive segments provided an opportunity for attendees to share personal experiences and ask questions in an open and supportive setting.

In addition, practical sessions introduced simple self-care practices and stress management techniques that participants can incorporate into their daily lives.

“We are truly inspired by the knowledge shared and the engagement from all participants,” Madam Dumbuyasaid. “We are committed to taking what we have learned beyond this seminar, sharing it with our colleagues and extending it to our communities to promote mental health awareness and support for women.”

She emphasised the need for collective action to break the silence surrounding mental health issues and to build stronger, healthier, and more informed communities.

Observers say the seminar reflects growing attention to mental health in Sierra Leone, particularly among women, and highlights the role of partnerships in advancing awareness and support systems across communities.
