The newly accredited U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, David Reimer, past weekend paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources at her Youyi Building Office in Freetown.
The objective of the envoy’s visit was to engage the ministry and familiarize himself with it activities with a view to identifying some of its achievements and challenges.
Ambassador, Reimer and staff of the ministry held discussions on a wide range of issues, including Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing, Surveillance, Monitoring and Control, Fish Stock Assessment, Quality Assurance, Aquaculture and the proposed Fish Harbour Project at Black Johnson, Western Area Rural District.
Receiving the Envoy, the Minister of Fisheries, Emma Kowa Jalloh, spoke of the cordial bilateral relations between the United States of America and Sierra Leone and hoped it will continue, while thanking him for the visit. Mrs. Kowa Jalloh informed him about strides her ministry has taken to streamline the fisheries sector and appealed for assistance especially in the areas of Surveillance, Monitoring and Control, Quality Assurance, Fish Stock Assessment, Aquaculture and Capacity building for staff.
The Minister also informed the Envoy about progress made so far on the proposed Fish Harbour Complex at Black Johnson, Peninsular, Western Area Rural District which she said, when completed, will boost the country’s economy and promote socio-economic development in the country.
Responding, the Ambassador, Reimer thanked the minister and team for steps taken to promote development in the sector and pledged his country continued support.
