It was the fifth election since the 1991-2002 brutal civil war which killed more than 50,000 people. International observers have already declared the elections to be peaceful and transparent.

The average national turnout was 2,578,271 (representing 81.11% of all registered voters), the election commissioner said.

President Bio, who faced sixteen candidates in the past elections, took 1,319,406 votes which is, 51.81% of the total votes to run his first term in office.

His supporters have been flooding the streets of Freetown and some parts of the country since the news of his comfortable win became known at 10:00pm last night, dancing, singing and banging pot covers, pans and other musical instruments.

Although many people around the world might still associate Sierra Leone with the Hollywood movie Blood Diamond, a place of war and atrocities, an Ebola, flood and mudslide hit nation Sierra Leone has fast become a peaceful, democratic nation even if it remains one of the poorest nations in Africa, with a large proportion of the population of about seven million living on less than $1.25 (80p) a day.
