Andrew Lavali is the Executive Director of Institute for Governance Reform and he spoke on the reasons for the increase in percentage.

According to Mr. Lavali the bribery rate in 2015 was 20% and in 2019 it increased to 33% for schools. He continued to say that it is even worse for clinics and health centers with bribery in 2015 standing at 25% and in 2019 it doubled to 50%.

Head of Media of the Sierra Leone Police Superintendent Brima Kamara said if the police force is less corrupt it will serve as a recipe to attract investors in the country as the security could be trusted. But however, he added, if the institution that is responsible to maintain law and order is fantastically corrupt, it would be a serious problem for the country.

The police was rated as the most corrupt institution with 64% in 2015 but performed better this 2019 with 39 percent rating in the report. Superintendent Brima Kamara assured that the force will work relentlessly to go below the 39%.

Executive Director of Transparency International Lavina Banduah commended Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) for their contribution to the Afro-Barometer report and assured her organization’s continued commitment to work in the fight against corruption.
