Part of a consignment of over 6 tonnes of medical supplies to help in the response to Friday’s fuel tanker explosion in Wellington, Freetown has arrived courtesy of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The consignment comprising one tonne of the total expected arrived aboard an Asky flight.

The WHO Country Representative, Dr Steven Shongwe, handed the supplies to Minister of Health Dr Austin Demby at a small ceremony at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi.

At least 97 people have been confirmed dead from the Friday, November 5 incident. Over 90 others who sustained injuries are being treated, some, according to the minister, with 90 degrees burns, which he said required special care and hence the support from international partners.

WHO, according to Dr Shongwe, is also helping Sierra Leone with expert medical personnel who are expected in the country shortly.
